All About Victory

Nike, Goddess of Victory

Nike is an old goddess, born before the Olympians and is a symbol of the Olympic games and competition. She is the goddess of victory. The daughter of Pallas and Styx. She helped the gods in their battle against the Titans and was rewarded by Zeus. She lives in Olympus close to Zeus, together with her siblings Zelos, Kratos, and Bia. Nike is Victory. She is often seen in company of Athena, who never puts up with defeat. Victory is the result of achieving the aim pursued, and is not limited to battle or sports. Success is victory. Victory is doing the hard thing because it is the right one instead of the easy thing. There is no pleasure in gaining Victory with hate, greed, contempt, revenge and fear and such. Victory tastes bitter if it has not been honestly earned.

Only later do they realise that wisdom is more important than strength. With victory this is also true. To win a contest wisdom is often more important than strength. She stood as Alexander became one of the greatest leaders in history and she watched as Rome conquered Egypt. Nike was there for it all. Triumphs of nations, victorious kings she lauded them all. Bright and shining in her armour through the Crusades to the conquering of Napolean through Europe. Nike celebrated in court and pumped the crowds up during the Olympics every four years, and she was there when peace ended the two Great Wars. Nike celebrated innovation and invention, triumph of mankind over the stars and advances in science. She is Nike. She is Victory.
